Baby Reindeer (2024)
Darkly Original
This series had the opportunity to go off the rails and devolve into a "made for Lifetime," trope-ridden, pithy pity party at so many turns, and yet, as it met each of those opportunities, it deftly and masterfully banked left and right to instead deliver one of the most brutally honest and complex stories I've ever seen. The main character is in many ways more exposed as the story develops than if he had performed the entire series stark naked, but as things are fleshed out in later episodes and the viewer is drawn in further, it's difficult not to turn the spotlight back on yourself and consider whether your participation in this isn't helping to feed someone else's darkness.
Scavengers Reign (2023)
A beautiful hellscape
The highlight of being sick on the couch yesterday is that I had time to binge watch the first nine episodes of this series. If you accept that plot and storyline (which begin to feel like they're slowing up a bit as the show progresses past the first few episodes) mainly serve as delivery vehicles for stunning otherworldly animation, then you'll probably enjoy it as much as I did. It's clear that a lot of care and thought went into creating this work - there's this sort of "National Geographic" feel to the way the viewer is shown the various habitats of this planet; someone clearly has an interest in biology and botany. I'm scared to see what's around the next bend, but I can't look away. It's gorgeous and terrifying.
Together (2021)
It's not a rom-com
Another excellent production that falls short of everyone's rom-com trope expectations because it's been classed as "Comedy Drama Romance" and unnecessarily suffers a low IMDb score as a result. No, this movie will not warm your heart and leave you gushing at the end, and I typically don't enjoy programming full of people being shouty and mean, but this really transcends all that. Even if the movie isn't for you, just sit through that first scene in its entirety and appreciate for a minute that the entire thing took place in a SINGLE SHOT. I have always enjoyed McAvoy and Horgan's work, but given this amazing script to work with, they more than do it justice, and I'm now convinced they've been underutilized in nearly everything else I've seen them in.
Suspicion (2022)
Can I get my time back please?
The only worthwhile part of this whole series is the speech Uma Thurman's character makes in Ep 8, but the entire thing is completely undermined by the fact that by the time we get to it, it barely makes any sense because of all the plot holes large enough to drive heavy machinery through that precede it.
Mr. Corman (2021)
It's not what you expect
One of the most interesting and real things I've seen in a long time. It shouldn't have been dropped into the "Comedy Drama" box, because I think that's giving people the impression that it's supposed to be a sitcom without a laugh track - it's so much more. If you don't feel this hit something way deep by episode 2, go ahead and switch it off. But if you do... stick around for the rest of it. It's worth it.
Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar (2021)
Haters gonna hate
Look, all I'm saying is this movie, a CBD gummy, + 500ml of warm sake = comedy gold. If you can't handle a couple of middle aged women being funny, GTFO.
The Prom (2020)
A lovely surprise
I tuned in for the cast alone, and from the get-go I was carried away. The acting, the songs, the script - all were top notch, but can we talk about the PRODUCTION VALUE??? It's a visually beautiful movie. Loved the whole thing, start to finish! (Pro tip: keep some Kleenex handy.)
The Boys (2019)
Move over marvel
Ok - think Watchmen, but smarter, better written, and better acted. Right off the series grabbed me, and it did not disappoint, all the way through the credits rolling on episode 8. One of the best rides I've been on in years!!!
Iron Fist (2017)
Rosario Dawson's hair is the best thing about this show
Marvel - be ashamed, be very ashamed. Not because of the identity politics stuff, but because you could have done this so much better.
Lost in Space (2018)
I LOVE this show!
Let me level set - huge fan of the show from my childhood, hugely disappointed in the movie from the 90s. I was hoping this show would have the light hearted campiness of the original series and spent about 25 min of the first show being irritated that it was too different. But, after you give it a minute - it's actually not!!! It's definitely darker, but it's smarter, yet all the "telenovela-esque" twists (as one reviewer described them) are very much a nod to the franchise's origins. It's an engrossing watch and I loved it! I'm only upset the series had 10 episodes in the first season. Please give us a second season, Netflix!!!!
