Basil Joseph nails it again, this time as an actor.
manasnag5018 November 2022
If you watched Minnal Murali, you prolly know about Basil Joseph.

JJJH is a movie about domestic violence in simple terms. BUT it's unlike your sob story kind of movie where you simply feel pity for the main character.

JJJH is witty, funny, and at times a little sad. But never for once will it make you settle down. You will notice all the ironical details about patriarchy in society and how domestic violence has been normalized for years. But all of these have been done in a not-preachy way.

There's this hilarious scene with a woman clad in Burqa and she is asking the other character to ask her husband how much freedom she enjoys...with the context of the film, it just gets absolutely hilarious. JJJH is phenomenally well-written.

And my word who knew Basil Joseph could portray a negative character in such a beautiful manner.

8.5/10 for me.

It was well worth the trouble of going to cinemas for a night show.

Do watch it folks if it eventually comes to cinemas or OTT.

More power to Malayalam films. At this point my expectations are too high for whatever they make.

Enjoyed it!!
TreeFiddy5325 December 2022
The trailer for this film reminded me of The Great Indian Kitchen (a brilliant film about women's empowerment that you SHOULD watch) from the same industry. I thought, "Interesting. Curious to see HOW you're gonna tell this story, since it's already been told."

Fam, this was very different from TGIK. Jaya Hey takes a comedic approach to the storytelling and it really worked. I was afraid how they were gonna tackle a serious topic with a serious message, but just as it is the case with almost every Malayalam film, they've pulled it off.

The plot is simple, Jaya has aspirations in life. Wants to go to college, and do her own thing. The society has other plans for her. Married life is not what she thought it would be. Things fall apart and you can guess what the rest of the film is about.

The lead actors - great acting!! Story - kept it simple, life of an avg Indian housewife kinda plot - stuff that you'd have seen/heard of/watched in daily life. Writing - great!! There are two twists in the film that you won't see coming.

If TGIK was too serious of a film and too hard hitting for your liking, this is brilliant and you'll enjoy this, and I don't think that the comedic take takes away anything from the serious message at all. You'll enjoy this one.

Fantastic Laugh Riot
nairtejas17 November 2022
Jaya Jaya Jaya Jaya Hey (Oh Win, Win, Win, Win) is a laugh riot that came out of nowhere. From the opening sequence, the film is clear in its ambition. To break open the systemic, sticky gender bias we all preserve in our daily lives. And from there, it goes deeper to flesh out related themes of domestic abuse, inequality, and matrimonial issues. And never does it stop pumping the humour while making statements about marriage and its typical workings. It's almost a satire but hits so hard that families watching this are bound to laugh out loud and then go back home to introspect. A wonderful cast doing a wonderful job is so rare and a laugh riot of this stature hasn't been done in the last decade in Malayalam movies.

Excellent movie.

Brilliant acting by everyone .

Become a big fan of darshana after watching this movie.

I always like her movies she has been in .. But this movie was whole new level.

Ppl giving 7/10 rating for this is so sad. Best Malayalam movie i have seen. Thought nothing will beat Malayalam comedy kilukam. But this movie , I was laughing my heart out late at night. Was worried my neighbors will make a complain laughing too hard late night LOL.

I guess, some male chauvinist won't like this movie . It is high time Keralites bring more movies like this that showcases life of women in kerala / india.

Realistic and fun movie about domestic abuse
Jithindurden24 December 2022
There were so many moments in the film that I felt like this is something I'm so familiar with in real life and in cinema but never have I seen this portrayed with such fun and realism at the same time. Whenever domestic abuse news comes up people talk about various points where it should've stopped but those same people in Kerala will act like the family of Jaya in this film. This film opens up that hypocrisy in the most fun way possible. The character of Rajesh is very very familiar to me. The realism that may feel absurd to anyone outside of Indian culture is always pushed just a tiny bit so that it can be made into a fun movie. It is from Rajesh's action that I noticed the little tweak in realism. It is not enough to not call it realistic but still manage to do that so that the nuances are clearly conveyed in the most fun way. I'm really glad this became such a massive success in Kerala. There would be many Rajesh in the audience who would clap to this film and then go on doing the exact same thing to their wives.

Darshana-Basil duo give a hilarious flick with a pertinent topic
thepranavbiju30 October 2022
JJJJH starring Darshana Rajendran in the lead and directed by Vipin Das is a clever laugh riot that looks like a spiced up and more cinematic version of "The Great Indian Kitchen" and deals with a highly pertinent and disgusting problem in our society. Special mention to the maker for choosing to stand with the protagonist all along instead of whitewashing the toxicity and two-faced behavior of her parents and in-laws. A group of fresh faces give hilarious performances along with the ever-reliable Basil, Asees Nedumangadu, Manju Pillai, Noby and Aju Varghese. DOP Bablu gives some fresh coloring to the outskirts of Kollam. Ankit Menon's music is fine even if the songs are unnecessary.

Must watch!

Nice movie but lacks basic logic
ronniejoseph00731 October 2022
It felt like Basil Joseph forced himself to make a movie in the same genre after the success of another similar film "The Great Indian Kitchen".

Logical Fallacies: 1. No one can be so good in Karate by just watching YT and practicing at home.

2. Even if we say that is true, the guy also learned Karate from YT, and according to proven human strength, male >female in muscle power. But in movie we see that Jaya is beating a couple a guys at the same time which felt absurd.

3. The climax felt absurd and seemed to be shortened to wrap the films shooting. Since Basil is holding control of poultry farm across that area, under no logical circumstances , he won't be well aware that Jaya has bought the other man's farm. He / his workers will surely know before going to court itself.

Overall, I wished the film would have ended amicably with both accepting their faults(more by Basil) rather than existing "brandishiment" of women empowerment which is common off late for men vs women genres right in Kerala.

Malayalam cinema Rocks
ns-4237126 December 2022
After watching several Malayalam movies and "Palthu Janwar" (translated hindi name). I an fan of Malayalam cinema... Now about Jaya Jaya Jaya Hey.. I didn't want the movie to end what a nice story line ..kept me captured the whole time .. every men and women should watch this.

Showing the harsh reality with the tadka of humor which made the movie quite fanatic to think upon .

It showed the real faces whether it was the husband or the family of the bride. Sweet and tangy slap to the male dominating society we are living in.

The funniest part was the wresting commentary which was hilarious. On the contrary the emotional part was the duration protagonist aka antagonist trying to be sweeter to his wife and she came to know his plan.

Comedy. That's what this is.
Unfilmy5 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The movie can be watched in good fun but it's not more than that. The problem of domestic violence is a very serious one and the solution is definitely not having a boxing match. There are some misogynist dialogues, probably to rile women up and both the families are being shown as unsupportive of the girl which is kind of heartbreaking. The husband here is an a-grade pr***, who slaps his wife just to show his authority. The transformation of wife into a goons-fighting, karate champion is very unbelievable. Finally, I didn't like that the girl's family, too, didn't get to learn a lesson. Darshana has done a good job, rest all are passable.

Angushment for millions of Women
thecriticsreality28 December 2022
Movie is quite precise because situations of women in our country is abnormal that how they are treated from birth to death . If you've seen the movie, you must've known, that women face a lot of traumatize situations from her childhood like her education, marriage conflicts, low attaintion of her own family, after marriage situations and also her fighting spirit for emerging from traumas .

Director's vision was completely based on substantial reality of a woman's life .

Director have shown a criticized shame for those who thinks that woman is a Borden for her family . A scene where some relatives are crying at marriage fairwell .( A sympathetical situation with a unsympathetic manner)

Victorious Jaya
sudhakaranakhilan8 November 2022
At the initial moment I felt like the title of the movie directly invite me to the old school days because it was heard at the end portion of the Indian National Anthem. The film also refers to that. But when we swirl deep into the meaning of the title, it looks more evident and clear. The story of a local, simple and as well as a village girl named Jaya, her protest against some of the unwritten notion which put on her. Her hitting towards her husband not only struck alone to him but also points fingers towards entire section of the society. When it comes to Jaya, she points to her father and mother where the base of all matters arose from her family.

One-sided film
humanitieskollam30 October 2022
The film is comedy but it focus on one woman in the whole story. Nowadays, the domestic violence is faced by men too but this movie shows man as the person who first beaten his wife many times without any appropriate reason. In fact, there are always some reasons why woman gets beat from her husband. They may be due to alcohol effect, violent talks by wife or domestic violence done by wife against husband. This film failed to show the real/original character of the wife. Instead, it focussed on the bad attitude of the husband only. Lastly, the judge in the court said that woman needs three things in life- equality, justice and independence. Why can't judge say that all genders such as man, woman and transgender requires these three principles? It shows a partial judgement. I didn't like this movie. It is a feminism - oriented film.

They don't make them like this anymore...
afsalmd-1513222 December 2022
I think I watched these type of genre once in a while long time ago when I was young, but I didn't remember much. Now that I have been looking for a film like this to come out, it made me look into this movie and watch it.

This movie is so damn good. I can't remember the last time I saw an empowerment film this good, so I guess sthey just don't make them like this anymore, sadly...The writing, the characters, the directing, the acting, the action, the drama, the music...It's all so good, I have to say this is probably one of the best movies in the genre that I've seen. A masterpiece. The 2 and half hours do not overstay their welcome. This one will most likely grip you. Do yourself a favour and watch this. For myself I think I'm gonna go ahead and re-watch anytime soon actually. Movies rarely ever satisfy me like this anymore...

2022 Malayalam hit
sonysolenchandy30 October 2022
Watched to movie in an Abu Dhabi Cinema with a houseful crowd.

It is a simple realistic satire The cast dont have super stars or their image burden ..

Sathyan Anthikad always potrayed all time hit satires .. The light hearted movies like Sandesham is still relevant after decades as Kerala politics still remains there.

Same way we keralites pretend to educated and modern but still there are lot of taboos which we have to get rid of ..if we have to become a progressive evolving community .

This is a low budget movie where Director leaves his mark .When the reflection is on the society the crowd relates to movie...

This movie will be one of the biggest hits in Kerala for 2022.

Nice Comedy with excellent performances
rajnnair23 December 2022
The story is about Jaya who does not have freedom to decide what she wants and its always someone else who makes all the decisions for her without asking her opinion. She gets married to Rajesh and becomes regular victim of Domestic violence. The movie clearly shows the double standards of her parents and in las and she has to endure before she finally decides its enough. Many will relate to the story as it is relevant.

The scenes are well written and many of them will make you laugh aloud.

Darshana as Jaya is excellent.

She is supported by all the cast who all do a great job.

The star however is Basil who is superb as Rajesh. This is one of his finest performance.

The fight scene in the end was unnecessary and over the top, which defied logic.

One of the best malayalam movies in recent years
ashishjoy28 January 2023
I have watched this already 3 times. The triumph of human spirit is best portarayed in this movie. The director has done a amazing job. Darshana absolutely stole the show. Basil hats off buddy. Loved the supporting cast. Half way thru was wondering what's gonna happen. But the 2nd half literally packed a punch.

Background score is top notch. The songs are beautiful especially the one when darshana in the car going towards the grooms home. The songs by darshana and basil truly touching.

Above all a great message on how when all doors close how a person can through sheer will power achieve success.

A girl kid in a mallu family
firoz-aboobaker16 September 2023
Malayalam Industry always comes up with relevant social subject and gives a punch on the face of the society. This is most of the girls are brought up in Kerala. They have freedom, but not as much as the boys. But it is slowly changing but it takes time.

Jaya Jaya Jaya hei touches all the matters very convincingly without being preachy. There is a part where Jaya's mother announcing all the liberty given to Jaya to do what she wants by her family, where you realise the lack of it. The The fights were little filmy and non realistic but the audience will be happy to see the men getting what they deserve. Both Basil and Darshana acted so well. Also the supporting characters did really well.

Epic fun!
gee-s29 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
So glad to see movies of this quality churn out of the mostly reliable Malayalam film industry.

Basil Joseph has done outstanding justice to this role and Darshana has essayed her character with stunning perfection.

This is not an unusual saga. This is real. This happens. The scenes where the husband beats up the wife and takes her for a treat afterwards as an apology only to repeat it again is heartbreakingly real. The way the friends talk about this casually and write it off is just as surreal.

The supporting cast did an amazing job at playing key roles with finesse.

The feather on the cap was the jaw hurting laugh that this movie could elicit out of the audience with such a grave underlying subject. Hats off to the director, writer, the entire team for a brilliant movie that deserves a pan audience.

Jaya Jaya Jaya Jaya Hey is a brilliant attempt of making finest humor with social message.
Vetrrich_Chelvan20 January 2023
After The Great Indian Kitchen, Malayalam cinema has come up with another story featuring women empowerment and domestic abuse. Much like the other film, the lead character is subjected to domestic cruelty but the way the issue is handled completely different and unique, and that is something to watch this film for.

It is not an excellently made film in terms of quality but still the screenplay and direction manages to pass the message effectively. Humor works out. Which means the characters are all two dimensional and they narrate dialogues much for comedic relief and sarcasm. There is no depth.

"Enthanithu Engottithu" is catchy. Pass for other songs. It is great that Basil Joseph has made a cinema that conveys a heavy hearted concept with a light hearted humor but what bothers is that, whenever Malayalam cinema comes up with these kinds of films, suddenly, all the characters become Hindus.

Next time, I hope to watch a Malayalam film, that stands against male chauvinism in general without typecasting or attaching religious tags to the story.

Watched on Hotstar - 19-01-2023.

Amazing
soorajg39329 December 2022
A Must watch. Amazing satire about Toxic masculinity and how women are taught form childhood to adjust to the patriarchal norms of the society. This film leaves a impression on how we as a society should deal with women issues right from the birth of a child. Even the high rate of suicide by married women is because of the mindset of our society

Movie is shot in Kerala, but the story is applicable in every part of India.

As India is one of the most dangerous countries for a women to survive. Movies like this should make a difference

All the characters were so realistic in nature. Sending such a beautiful message.

A relevant subject handled both seriously and humorously! [+71%]
arungeorge131 November 2022
JJJJH is a film that doesn't take long to get its point across, though the writing, packaging, and performances keep you interested throughout. It'd be easy to tag JJJJH as a funnier sibling to Jeo Baby's The Great Indian Kitchen, but it's in fact so much more. Right from the opening credits, we sense how Jaya's (Darshana Rajendran in superb form) smiles turn into pale frowns, how her life is moulded by everyone else but herself, and how she is cornered into making decisions (against her will) by the family. A lot of reviews called this a laugh riot, which it rightfully is. Here, the laughs are generated from situations you and I have come across in real life, and presented in an extremely relatable manner by the entire cast.

Whenever the writing gets subtle, the laughs get bigger and better. There is, of course, a feeling of déjà vu (especially from Sreenivasan films like Vadakkunokkiyanthram) owing to a few plot developments. The way they're treated is surprisingly contemporary, and the performances give it a fresh spin. JJJJH is strikingly good when it sticks to Jaya's perspective because the film's primary arc is hers. Some of the techniques that Jeo Baby used in his film are used here albeit in a hilarious way. For instance, Jeo Baby repeatedly showed us shots of the dingy kitchen to depict how mechanically routine the protagonist's life was. In this case, patriarchial conditioning makes Rajesh slap his wife (as many as 21 times in six months), apologize to her shortly after by taking her to the movies, dining out, and ordering his favorite dishes - the cycle of events repeating itself.

As an actor, Basil Joseph seems to get better and better with each film, and he makes Rajesh supremely easy to dislike. He shines as the wrong example for men in 2022, who still think that showing vulnerability is less manly. He's also the kind who believes the women in his life (mother, sister, and wife included) are devices that exist to listen and act as per his wishes. In a satirical environment like the one that director Vipin Das (who also fairly impressed me with Antakshari earlier this year) creates, I didn't imagine action set-pieces (feat. Shaiju Damodaran's funny commentary) to play such a key role. Darshana handles them terrifically - nope, you wouldn't want to mess with Jaya!

The supporting acts also deliver what's needed and bring in the laughs (+ harsh realities). Sudheer Paravoor, Azees Nedumangad, the actress who played Rajesh's mother, and more deserve special kudos. The final courtroom scene is also a blast, with several wrongdoings against women being called out and effectively satirized.

Silly movie
rahul-2186525 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
These days, filmmakers decide the audience demographics and ticket sales even before a script is started on. The result of this is 'Jaya Hey'. Make a woman-centric film and 50% of Kerala's population will watch it. The rest 30% will come from the men that will tag along, hoping to spend some 'quality time' with their partner. Malayalam cinema has to mature out of the 'revenge' plot to every challenge the protagonist faces. This movie starts off great, showing how the newly married husband's temper issues get out of hand and how the wife is trying to handle the abuse. There could've been far more realistic and practical solutions shown, which the audience could actually benefit from, rather than the silliness we were subjected to. Watched it only for Darshana.

MUST WATCH!! Are you esp an Indian man/boy? Watch this now.
mhkghbmtz23 December 2022
GREAT movie. Didn't give it a 10/10 simply because I felt it was too long and it could've been shortened a bit.

However... any person that has an ounce of Indian blood or identifies as an Indian needs to watch this. Esp Indian men and boys. This depicts a great problem that has such a fine line that men often don't see what the issue is. It depicts domestic abuse, gaslighting, parental control, patriarchal society, and much much more. It was comedic at times which was a great bonus to the serious issue at hand as well. It depicts the plight of women everywhere but especially in a "men is the head of the house" BS ideals. Highly recommend this movie!!!

One of the highly entertaining films of 2022. A must watch.
chand-suhas15 November 2022
This satire on the familiar theme, highlighting a very important issue stands out for incredible writing. Kudos to the team for using humor the best way possible without taking away the seriousness of the core issue. Jayabharathi (Darshana Rajendran) hailing from a patriarchal family, is raised without any freedom, sacrificing her choices at each phase of her life. Even her marriage to Rajesh (Basil Joseph) is not her decision. All her life, she only had the men to decide for her, never asking for her opinion. When her husband pushes her to the extreme, her retaliation is what sets this movie apart big time.

As serious the main plot is, the screenplay constantly throws stand out scenes that are high on entertainment. The humor works like a gem and in my show itself, we just kept clapping and hooting non-stop. The pace does get slow in the third act but the climax is rewarding. Both Darshana & Basil Joseph come out with laudable performances, firmly aided by the supporting cast. I wouldn't say it went over the top because those scenes alone were an asset.
